Celebrating 28 years of Gooseberry Guesthouse magic

5th Ave Gooseberry Guesthouse

If the walls of Gooseberry Guesthouse could talk, they’d probably sing! Nestled in the leafy suburb of Linden, Johannesburg, 5th Avenue Gooseberry Guesthouse is celebrating 28 years of charm, creativity, and comfort.

The Charm of the Guesthouse

What started as a dream has bloomed into a beloved family business — a space that has hosted everyone from TV stars to soul-searching retreat-goers. For many, Gooseberry has become more than just a guesthouse.

“It’s a space where creativity meets calm — where people come to rest, connect, and sometimes rediscover themselves. From the beginning, my purpose was to create a place where guests could experience true peacefulness, away from the rush, and feel the warmth and friendliness of being welcomed as if by old friends or family,” says Susan Berry, owner and founder of 5th Avenue Gooseberry Guesthouse.

And it’s true — over the years, Gooseberry has provided not only a bed, but also a sense of belonging, calm, and quiet inspiration.

Creativity

Gooseberry’s charm has also made it a sought-after backdrop for creativity. For 11 years, the guesthouse was home to the Idols SA Top 10 finalists — a place where nerves settled and dreams took flight.

But, musicians weren’t the only ones inspired here. The guesthouse has been featured in lifestyle magazines, television interviews, and creative projects of all kinds. Most recently, Hykie Berg was photographed at Gooseberry for a LIG Tydskrif shoot, and the guesthouse also appeared on kykNET’s Bravo in an episode featuring well-known personalities. And here’s more: In addition to the weekend retreats, Saturday Women’s Mornings are being planned for those who can’t commit to a full weekend. That means you can still join in, or host your own retreat at Gooseberry Guesthouse even if your time is limited.
